PROJECT: Keith purchased a rental property that was in good shape except for the landing and stairs off the sliding glass door in the back yard. The existing landing was about four feet square with a set of rickety stairs descending to the concrete patio. These were poorly built, unsafe, made of fir and had never been stained and so were badly deteriorated. Keith wanted this replaced with a small deck the width of the sliding glass door and wide steps down to the patio, decked in synthetic material (similar to Trex decking) to prolong life and reduce maintenance.

This freestanding deck is not attached to the house to reduce possibility of any structural damage. The deck is securely attached to the concrete slab for increased stability.

At my suggestion, Keith agreed to the addition of safety rails, although they are not required by code in a deck of this height. They are built of redwood and add beauty as well as safety.
