PROJECT: Roger & Susan's multiple-deck project consisted of a large, 20' x 16' deck off the sliding glass door at the back of the house and a smaller deck, 16' x 12' for the front entryway.
Both decks were topped with synthetic materials (similar to Trex). The front deck was covered in a standard synthetic board with gaps between
to allow snow and debris to pass through. The back deck, however, was covered with a special tongue and groove synthetic deck material and fitted snugly to form a solid floor, as they plan to enclose this area in the future to create a screened porch.
The project was located in hot and arid Southern Colorado, outside of Trinidad. The synthetic decking material was chosen because of its ability to withstand the high heat, intense sun, and arid conditions of this region and low maintenance requirements. The extra material costs are offset reduced maintenance costs and extended lifespan.
Although both of these decks come with a quarter inch of the house, each is freestanding. This prevents damage to the home, as well as enabling easier siding replacement in the future.
